CIVIL MARRIAGES IN COSTA RICA

REQUIREMENTS
 

Regardless of whether you are Costa Rican or foreign, everyone must meet the following requirements to be able to get married:
 

• Be over eighteen years of age.
   

• To be in freedom of state.
   

• To have volitional or cognitive capacity at the time of the marriage.
   

• To have two witnesses that attest under oath about the freedom of state and legal aptitude of the contracting parties.
  
   

The verification of birth and marital status will be carried out by processing and obtaining birth and marital status certificates issued in your country of origin.

If your country of origin does not provide such documents; you must provide a complete copy of your valid passport and issue a notarized affidavit in which, subject to the penalties of imprisonment for false testimony, you declare that you are free to enter into marriage.
